I have been fortunate to have many writing opportunities, ranging from small local publications to chapters in "Gold-Standard" textbooks. My father was a very prolific writer (much of his work can be found on another site of mine, Focusforforty.com). Unfortunately, Dad did not have things too organized and only on occasion did he offer any commentary on his work. I have sought to "modernize" the family archive with some thoughts for the interested. John
Abstracts
This is the abstract from a paper I presented at a WHO conference in Vancouver, Canada in the early 1990s....it remains the most completely documented case of surgical excision of insulin (I got tissue levels of insulin)...someday I am going to submit this for formal publication...have just never gotten around to it...I have subsequently treated a second person with a similar treatment...both were successful.
Journal Articles
AAP Policy Statement on Homosexuality in Adolescence
I co-authored this landmark paper published in Pediatrics in the early 1990s; it represented the first time the word "normal" was used by the AAP in discussing adolescent homosexuality
Abdominal Pain in College Students
Written in conjunction with my mentor, Don Greydanus....obscure journal.
Adolescents and the Emergency Room (Version 1)
Adolesecents and the Emergency Room (Version 2)
Short piece I wrote and was able to bring a young medical student, Michael Simmons, on for his first publications. Published in a couple of places by the same publisher
Adolescents and the Workplace
This is one of my favorite pieces...my co-authors include my best mentor/teacher (Dad) and my "little" sister, Virginia Anne; published in Adolescent Medicine: State of the Art Reviews.
Homosexuality in Adolescence
This piece appeared is from the AAP journal for the section on adolescent medicine; it was a result of the earlier chapter published with Don Greydanus in his Behavioral Pediatrics textbook
Hypertension in Adolescents
This was also written for the AAP...would later be referenced in Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics...my first such referenced article.
Pediatrician's role in smoking cessation/prevention
A piece from my fellowship, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics...great to know how much progress has been made in smoking prevention in adolescents.
Portraits (JAMA)
This is the first "major" publication I had. The young child of whom I wrote is now married and just had (2014) his first child; we have reconnected via Facebook in the past couple of years. He is simply my favorite patient...ever! The piece was published initially in JAMA and then a few years later was selected for a book of stories published by the AMA.
Relative Based Value Units (RBVS)
A short piece published in JAMA in 1992 on the inherent flawed nature of the RBVS system with respect to primary care...the system, now in place for 2 decades, rewards procedures over thought...why the surgeons all drive fancy cars.
Recombinant Hyaluronidase for contrast extravasation
Case report published on the use of Hylenex for treatment of contrast extravasation; first published report of this in the English literature
Romancing the Automobile
I utilized the resources of EKU's College of Justice for this paper.
Transplant Medicine
This is an interesting little piece that is quite special for many reasons. Back in junior high I did a report on organ transplants and have always been fascinated by the science. During my years in PICU I unfortunately took care of many donors; the situations were always tragic but the thought that something good would come to someone else was always a motivating factor in the care of these children and working with families to get donations was/is both stressful and rewarding. As an aside, there was a nurse who was involved in the care of the patient that prompted this article that ended up being pretty special herself....so special that I married nurse Sharon. :)
Transition of Care of Youth with Chronic Disease
As a med-peds person, it was logical that I got involved with chronic illness in adolescents...much of my career at Memorial focused on such children (diabetes, sickle cell, etc.)
Untaken Steps and Untold Stories (Annals Version)
One of two versions (this one is from Annals of Internal Medicine) aof a short essay I wrote about an older man, a busy, doctor, and a world too busy. My father was especially fond of this piece as he said it reminded him of his father.
Book Chapters
Adolescents at WorkChapter for the AAP Textbook on Adolescent Healthcare...a very good book that never really reached the publication capacity anticipated; but a good piece nonetheless.
The Adolescent Health Maintenance Examination
This version is from a textbook on Adolescent Medicine published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. This paper began as a review for a newsletter but became the standard until the American Medical Association developed "GAPS" (Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services); much of this was later incorporated into the AAP's "Bright Futures" campaign.
The Cardiovascular System (chapter)
This was a chapter in the textbook Adolescent Medicine that was initially written by my "Academic Grandmother," Dr. Adele Hoffmann. Dr. Hoffmann was one of the founders of the discipline of Adolescent Medicine and her protege, Dr. Donald Greydanus, was/is my mentor.
Concepts of Emergency Care
An invited chapter, somewhat of an unusual topic to place in Don Greydanus's book Adolescent Medicine: Pharmacotherapeutics in General, Mental, and Sexual Health.....narrow audience.
Homosexuality in Adolescence
This is the first chapter I ever had published. My mentor, Dr. Donald Greydanus, asked me to write this chapter from a purely objective standpoint...to date the overwhelming majority of the literature on homosexuality had been written from a biased perspective and frequently "with an agenda." We tried hard to make this a simple, objective review of the topic...several more papers/presentations would emerge from this chapter.
Update on Meningitis
This is a piece that I initially planned on writing with one of my mentors but he was unable to complete the piece so I recruited Dr. Thacker; it is a good review of meningitis (I wrote the section on vaccines and bacterial meningitis) and it was actually published in the first "book" that I was ever the lead editor...finally got my name on the OUTSIDE of a book
Obesity in Adolescents (Book Chapter)
This is a chapter in a later edition of Adolescent Medicine (Greydanus & Patel); it was written after I left my "academic" job; I have tried to publish something at least every two or three years since leaving that position.
Portraits
One of two versions, this was published by the American Medical Association in A Piece of My Mind, Vol. 2.
Presenting Problems in Behavioral Pediatrics (Chapter)
From Greydanus and Wolraich, Behavioral Pediatrics
Also from Don Greydanus's Adolescent Medicine
Untaken Steps and Untold Stories (Book Edition)
One of two versions (this one is from the book On Doctoring, Vol 3., of a short essay I wrote about an older man, a busy, doctor, and a world too busy. My father was especially fond of this piece as he said it reminded him of his father.
